My kids and I have an obsession with felt! I know that sounds really sad lol! Seriously though these felt fun activity boards are so functional you can create fun for hours. We’ve used it to make clothes for our dolls, cards and home made gifts for family. In fact you may see felt pop up here a few times in our activities now and then 😉

Felt Board Fun

My absolute favourite however is our felt boards that we made. I saw something online that reminded me of the felt board that I had as a kid.

With a decent pair of scissors and some patience you could easily make your own. I say patience because this activity does take some prep work but it is so worth it to see how the kids play with them and really enjoy creating.

We made different themes. I put them in separate bags and labeled them. This makes it easier to find pieces when they are creating their scene.

A few different themes we did were;

  • Dinosaurs
  • People, Hair & Clothes
  • In Space
  • Weather
  • Vehicles
  • Monsters
  • At the beach
  • Shapes
  • Snowmen
  • Garden
  • Mr.Potato head
  • Gingerbread people
  • Halloween

The kids tend to mix the pieces up when they are creating but it’s pretty easy clean up if they all have their own bags.

It’s actually a good way to teach the kids about sorting. I just love to see their creativity when they are making their scene. They usually tell a story as they are making them.

How To Make Your Felt Board

For our felt fun board we just used cardboard from a cereal box. But you can go with something sturdier to avoid bending. I used hot glue to attach the background and the felt pieces just stick.

The large felt board was an old piece of plywood that was sanded down to prevent sharp edges and we used bigger pieces of felt for bigger backgrounds. I done a different scene on each side of the large board, one black and one with sky and grass.

Story Telling With Felt

What I absolutely LOVE about these fun felt pieces is that the ideas are endless. I used two of our favourite books to create the characters and got the kids to help add them to the board as we told the story 🙂

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

The story characters were our favourites because we used the books as a guide and my son loved how he was able to add the little pieces as we were telling the story. It also helped with counting and learning their colours. Story telling can be fun when props are involved.

We store these away in our busy boxes and even now when I take them out the kids sit and play with them for a good while. Even my son who is now 9! I feel like these felt pieces will be something timeless and will be passed onto the grandchildren. A good teaching tool all round and so simple!
