For your monster game you will need;
- Some felt (lots of colours)
- A big dice
- Scissors
- Double sided tape
- Our FREE build a monster printable
For the dice you will need a large foam dice. It doesn’t have to extremely large. You can usually pick these up from craft stores or your local pound or dollar store! These are good for doing all kinds of games. You can find lots of music and movement games online.
It doesn’t matter if the pieces are a tad smaller than the dice. So long as you can see them clearly. I used double sided tape to stick onto the squares. That way they are easy to remove after the game.
Making Your Monsters
When cutting felt pieces out, they don’t have to be perfect. Items like a body, arms, legs, eyes etc. They can be different shapes or sizes. Cutting out different colours makes this game more inviting to children. Build a monster game is exactly that, they are building a monster. And it is their creation so it can be a quirky as they like.
For the boards, you will need some cardboard that is sturdy. Stick on some felt and your good to go. We already had some felt boards from our felt story boards. Your boards don’t have to have scenes on them like ours. They can be just one background colour. After all it’s only as a base to stick your monster to.

Playing the game
Once you have all your felt pieces and your printable cut out and stuck to your dice it’s time to play your build a monster game!
The idea of the game is to roll the dice and add body pieces to your monster. The only rule we had was that everyone had to roll a body before they could start building their monster. It didn’t take long for one of us to get a body piece. Each side of the dice has a different body part. Kids can choose whether they want to add another of that body piece if they already have it.
The side of the dice that has multiple pictures on gives children an opportunity to become even more creative with their monster. They can add horns or a tail or even a sticky out tongue. I love how it gives kids the freedom to be as creative as they possibly can.
We had no winners or losers in this game so it is super friendly and none competitive 😉
This way everyone is happy and has fun building their monster. Kids can use their imagination and learn to take turns as they play along.
And each individual monster will look different to the next. Even when you play again and again. I recommend taking pictures of the kids monsters.
