If your kids are anything like mine, they love making up their own rules when it comes to playing games. This can be a good thing in some ways but also can cause arguments and then all the fun is knocked right out of the game.
So we decided to make our own board games with our own ‘viable’ rules lol! My son made slightly too many rules to start with which was a little overwhelming for my daughter so we toned them down a bit so that we could play as a family. My son tends to be pretty competitive so this was a good lesson learner for him. It runs in our family, Im sure we all have them in our families 😉
We used large poster card/paper for our game(s) and drew how we wanted the layout, adding squares for counters to move along. We also added rainbows to slide across the board in between.
In my sons game we had individual squares that were coloured. Different colours representing a number (as pictured)
‘Our Finished Board‘
When we landed on a square we would collect a math cube and stack them to make a tower. We used these math cubes which are fantastic and so versatile when learning.
We used dice and little wooden pieces to go around the board. You can pretty much use anything as counters, from lego characters to bottle lids (whatever you have handy)
The object of this game was to see how many points you could get by building the blocks. The person with the most points (not blocks) was the winner.
There was some addition to work out in this game so it took a little brain work at the end. My daughter just counted how many blocks she had by colour, as it was easier for her to count how many reds, how many pinks etc. For my son it was a little more challenging, but the concept came straight from him so that was a bonus!
My daughters idea for her game was slightly different although we still coloured squares in. We used her princess characters and made it ‘princess orientated’ adding a dragons lair, a witches cave and a royal palace for the finish line. She also wanted to include her horses so we had a ‘miss a turn, ride a horse’ square 🤣 her idea! 👍🏻
Her brother and I helped her with the drawings but she made up the rules as we drew it out.
Surprisingly she played the game well and didn’t get mad when her brother won the first game lol! We learnt counting, taking turns and patience.
It was all round fun for the family and kept us all busy when we had already had all our regular board games out.
