Who doesn’t love a rainbow? My kids are all about making rainbows whether it be when we do crafts or baking activities. We don’t often paint but when we do, we have every colour available so I thought this would be a fun one to do. For these rolling rainbows all you need is;

  • A Sponge/Sponges
  • Rolling pins
  • Paper or card
  • LOTS of coloured paints, nice bright colours! We used acrylic paints but tempura paints will work just as well.
  • Aprons/Smocks if you have them (this one is messy lol)

We also covered our table as I knew this activity may be a little messier than our usual ones. The messier the better though right?! 😜

Then have your kids go to town picking out colours for their rainbows. For the sponge painting the kids put a dot of paint on along the sponge to create a rainbow pattern.

The rolling pin rainbows were by far our favourite! And the kids reaction was fab when they saw the colours appear. I got the kids to put a dot of each colour at the top of their paper in a line. Then they used the rolling pin to roll out their colours down the page. It looked so pretty! 🌈

We also used cardboard pieces for ‘scraping’ our colours. The effect was also very cool and the kids were able to form a rainbow across the page for this one.

Our pictures turned out so pretty and dried out well. I would definitely point out not to use too much paint as a couple of our pictures were drowned in paint and smudged too much. But it definitely makes for lovely art work with small amounts.

A nice keepsake for those scrap books.
