Clothes pegs are so versatile and can be used for all kinds of things. Crafts made with pegs can often become something useful. Whether it be using as a bookmark or holding art work up in your room. These little caterpillar pegs are a cute little accessory that can be played with, but will also help children with their fine motor skills.
We always make sure we have everything set up before starting. That way you’re not running around trying to find stuff lol!
For this craft you will need;
- Clothespegs (the clippy ones)
- Pom Poms (various sizes)
- Googly Eyes
- Green Card
- Leaf Template
- Scissors
- Hot Glue
- Hole Punch

Assembling Your Caterpillars
Start off picking out a larger Pom Pom. This will be the head. An adult may need to help smaller children with gluing the Pom Poms on. Regular glue works too, but kids will have to wait for them to dry. We find hot glue is great for these crafts. But it is personal preference, and regular glue is good when doing these in a pre-school setting.

The larger Pom Pom is glued to the end of the peg which opens. If you are using hot glue, hold the Pom Pom down onto the peg for about 5 seconds. It sets pretty quickly!
Pick out which smaller colours your child wants for the body and set them aside so you have them ready to stick on. Depending on how big your pegs are, and how close you put them together you should be able to fit about 6-7 smaller Pom Poms along the peg.

Next add googly eyes. The eyes can be tricky to put on as they are small so children do need help with this part even when using regular glue.

Making A Caterpillar Leaf
The next part is making the leaf for the caterpillar. If you are using regular glue this is a good time to set your caterpillar aside and let it dry.
Have a template ready so you can have your child draw around it. You can use one of our FREE printable Leaf templates if you don’t have one.

Next using the hole punch, punch random holes around the leaf. This is just for show and can be where the caterpillar has eaten from. 🐛😍

My daughter wanted to make a whole family of caterpillars for her leaf. You can make all different colours and can even use all larger Pom Poms if you’d rather.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar
If you are doing The Very Hungry Caterpillar as a theme, its fun to make your caterpillar look like the one in the story. This can be used a story tool during story time. The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle is a children’s favourite worldwide and will continue to be for many years to come.

Fun little clothes peg caterpillar craft that is easy to do. Have fun crafting 😉🐛
