These clay faces are so fun to create and eco friendly too. We have a woods close to where we live that is surrounded by some awesome trees. We often walk through there and collect pine cones and leaves.

All you need is air dry clay! Preferably the air dry clay that you don’t need water for. We use this one;

My two needed a pack each as they surprisingly don’t go very far. However we did manage to make a face each with one pack.

Find A Tree

Firstly we stuck the clay to a tree. Any tree will do 🙂 The clay should stick to the tree without any problems. We tried making a circle shape so it resembled a face. But there aren’t any rules as to how your clay looks on the tree. As long as it sticks!

Next we went hunting around for items that we could add to our faces. Items like pine cones, spiky leaves, twigs, acorns. Even rocks. You can find all kinds of things in the woods that are good for this activity. The kids can get really creative finding items for hair, eyes, noses and other facial features.

Finding acorns

Once we found all the nature items that we wanted to use it was time to go to town creating. You can add funny hair, sticky out ears, even a beard lol! My kids were really creative with theirs and even gave them names. 😆

Great concentration

It certainly takes a bit of concentration adding all the pieces but that’s all part of the process. Some items will go in easier than others. The clay is pretty easy to work with but we did have to push certain items in harder, like acorns.

The faces will look almost camouflage once they are on the tree because of the colour of the clay. However we had people comment that they spotted our faces a few days later, which my kids got a kick out of!

Also I will say that the clay washes right off once it rains so it’s very eco friendly. The kids were a little disappointed when it rained and washed their faces off but they certainly had fun making them. It gave us something different to do on our walk and the kids got to explore all kinds of natural items.

Our Clay Creations!

Bearded clay tree!

Such a fun activity to do outdoors! This is definitely one activity that you can do over and over again. You can even get multiple packs of clay and make a couple different tree faces. We had only one pack each and my daughter wanted to do another one.
