Who doesn’t love making home made jewellery with their kids? My son came up with a genius idea using one little stationary item that we had in our craft drawer. Brads create a cool little ring. They are actually quite a handy little tool when it comes to school projects too but that’s for another day. 😉

Brads or sometimes known as brass fasteners, are generally used as securing multiple sheets of paper together. They can be purchased at stationary stores. My son noticed that the brads have a smooth part on the top. They also have two prong like legs which are pretty pliable. This gives ample opportunity for craft ideas.

For this craft all you need are brads and some shiny rhinestone gems. These are usually available at craft stores. We had some stick on gems which are very easy to apply. We also had some other gems which we had to glue on. If you have hot glue, the gems will stick better. So adult supervision is needed for this craft when using none stick on gems.

Shaping Your Ring

Start by pulling the prongs outwards to create two arm like points at each side.

This just makes it easier for the next step when the brad needs to be curled.

The trickiest part of this craft is getting the brad into a ring shape that will easily slide onto little fingers. We used a marker and wrapped the brad around to acquire a ring shape.

My son wrapped the brad around his sisters finger to measure it for size. I will point out that the brads are small so these rings are more for little fingers.

Because the stick on gems are very easy to apply, this is a great preschool class activity, as there isn’t any real need for adult assistance. The brads can even be shaped beforehand. Then the kids can just go straight to work adding their gems.

The coloured gems that we had , needed to be applied with glue. This takes a little supervision but my oldest who is almost 10 was able to help make these for his sister.

Applying The Gems

Make sure that the hot glue has warmed up so the glue comes out easily. Apply a small amount on the top part of the brad. Just enough to apply the gem- not too much! Carefully stick on the gem and hold it in place for about 5 seconds, watching not to burn your fingers. The hot glue dries pretty quick.

So there you have it! Simple and cute little Rhinestone Gem brad rings. If we hadn’t have ran out of brads my kids would have made more!! Seriously 😂😍💍

There are so many colours and shapes you can make!

This is a good little craft to do at a princess party. They also make a cute little addition to your child’s jewellery box and for dressing up.
