Smoothies are a great way to get fruit into fussy kids, and we definitely have one of those in our house! From my experience kids seem to be inclined to try different foods if they prepare them themselves. My daughter loves smoothies and will often ask for one at random times in the day when she’s feeling hungry! Im good with that.
What to use in your smoothies
I always like to put a variety of fruit out for the kids to pick out for their smoothies. It can be fresh fruit, or even tinned but we usually have frozen at hand. These are some of the things we put in our smoothies;
- Strawberries
- Mixed Berries
- Bananas
- Mango
- Spinach
- Yoghurt (Plain or flavoured)
- Juice (Orange, Apple)
- Milk (We use Almond milk but you can use any milk, soya, lactose free)
- Tinned Pineapple, Peaches or Pear
You can pretty much use anything in smoothies and I mean ANYTHING! We’ve added peanut butter, avocado, cocoa powder, kiwi, melon, the list is endless.
Adding Goodness
I always try to squeeze a little vitamin c into my kids smoothies. Even a hint of lemon gives them that boost without them knowing lol!
Smoothies are usually pretty sweet that they don’t even notice. Ive also added spinach in to give them that iron fix.
My daughter loves doing all the prep involved with making smoothies. So long as you have child friendly knives they can pretty much do most of the prep. My daughter loves to peel and slice the bananas.
The mango smoothie seems to be a favourite in our house. My daughter isn’t as keen on the berry smoothies as she doesn’t like ‘bits’ in her teeth.. that would be the seeds lol!
We have a small blender that we use but you can use any type of blender. This one does the job for us 😉
We have made names for all our different smoothies.. its become like a thing in our house 😂 Im not sure but I think it sometimes makes them sound all the more appealing with fancy names lol!
Merry Mango, Purple Paradise and Dino Juice are some of them lol!
In conclusion smoothies are a definite must for kids that are a little more pickier than others. And if the kids are wanting to make something in the kitchen, why not start off with simple!
