Like many others, during lockdown we craved hugs from family members. These long distance hugs were the perfect gift. My parents only live 10 minutes away but when we got hit by the pandemic it felt like they were miles away. Fortunately they created a bubble so we could finally be closer and get those hugs.

But for many, even without a pandemic they don’t live close enough to get hugs from loved ones. This is especially difficult for grandparents who crave to see their grandkids. Of course with technology now the world does seem a lot smaller than it did.

During lockdown my mum had a birthday and we had no idea what to do for her. On a normal birthday we’d visit with a cake, card and some home made gifts. This year we decided to make her virtual hugs. What a good excuse to do some crafting and take a drive over there even if it was to sing happy birthday from the window. 🥰

We started out by laying ourselves on some large paper. We only had brown paper but any paper will work. I drew around them from the chest up.

Then the kids picked out which colour paints they wanted to use for their hair and clothes, and even their skin lol! They set to work painting and drawing a face on themselves.

We left our long distance hugs to dry and went to baking a birthday cake.

When our art was done, we cut them out and started on our notes. We found a rhyme online which seemed to fit, so we typed it out and signed and decorated them to stick onto our hugs. You can always make your own little message or rhyme but this is the one we used 😉

Our Poem

These were the words that we put on our long distance hugs.

'I hate that we have to stay away
I miss you every single day
But since I can't come over to play
I'm sending out a hug today
Although it might be quite a sight
Wrap my arms around you tight
Repeat daily to keep your smile bright
Until we get to reunite'

My daughter is just learning how to write her name so this was good practise for her. She wanted to show her grandma how well she was doing with her letters.
The kids decorated their notes to put their personal touches ❤️

Birthday Cake

We also made a cake for grandma to go with her long distance hug. We couldn’t give it to her in person. But as we were only a few minutes drive away we couldn’t resist.

We then drove over to deliver our long distance hugs. It might have only been a 10 minute drive but felt much further when we couldn’t be with family. We sang happy birthday from the window and left grandma’s cake and our hugs on the doorstep. Grandma got such a lovely surprise and it was something different so it meant even more to her.
