Most kids are fans of the big M! My kids are no exception but we do try not to have it too often. Any burger joint is a winner with kids. It was time to show the kids how to make our own burgers. These homemade mini burgers were a big hit and surprisingly my daughter loved them too.

Ive made this recipe before when making burgers. My son did all the measuring out. I just got all the ingredients out and told him what to put in. You can find our full recipe below.

Start by having the kids smash up the crackers in a ziplock bag. We used a rolling pin but you can use anything, even just smashing them with your fist. Then add them to the bowl along with the beef.

Break up the mince and mix into the crackers. Crack the egg into a jug and whisk before adding to the bowl.

All other ingredients are then added to the bowl. My kids then took it in turns to mix it all together.

The kids had fun smelling the ingredients!

The mixture will start to bind with the egg. If its too sloppy then you can always add more crackers.

Forming Your Burgers

The next step is completely optional on how you do it. I purchased a small burger presser which I thought would be fun for the kids to use. It was pretty easy to use and made our homemade mini burgers just the right size for them.

With our presser we got 11 burgers. If you don’t have a burger presser you can shape the burgers into a ball and pat them out yourself but you may get less burgers depending on how big you make them. You can always make a couple of larger burgers and some smaller burgers.

Hygiene When Cooking

I will point out that the kids washed their hands thoroughly after handling raw meat. We are always very conscious about hygiene when baking and cooking.

Cooking The Burgers

Cooking the mini burgers is pretty easy and quick. We purchased one of these babies to do ours.

This drains all the extra fat that comes off the burgers that you normally have floating in a pan. They are great for all kinds of foods. But burgers especially!

Our burgers took about 3-4 minutes but if you are pan frying them they will take about 3-4 minutes each side. They really don’t take long, just make sure that they aren’t pink inside.

Building Your Burgers

The kids prepped all their veggies and everything they wanted to put on their burgers.

We used cookie cutters to cut our cheese slices so they would fit perfectly onto our mini burgers.

Older kids can slice some veggies with adult supervision and younger children can also participate using plastic/child safe knives.

Our burgers were a big hit with the kids! My daughter is my picky child- think I may have mentioned that before? 😆

But even she was still raving about these burgers the following day. She ate the whole thing.. even the bread! My two wanted some pasta alongside their burgers but you can do fries or even just salad to accompany.

There is definitely a lot of prep involved in this activity and it is a little messy but if your trying to get your kids to try foods or wanting them to get more involved in cooking, burgers are definitely a must try. The had fun making them and were proud of themselves too.

Equipment

  • 1-2 Mixing Bowls
  • Mixing Spoons
  • Burger Presser Optional
  • Rolling Pin
  • 1-2 Ziplock Bags
  • Baking Tray
  • Parchment Paper

Ingredients

  • 1 lb Lean Ground Beef
  • 12-13 Salted Crackers
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 Tbsp Onion Powder
  • 1 Tbsp Garlic Salt/Powder
  • 1 Tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 Tbsp Ketchup

Instructions

  • Start by crushing crackers in ziplock bags using rolling pin.
  • Add the crackers to a large mixing bowl along with the ground beef.
  • Break up the beef and mix with the crackers
  • Crack open an egg and whisk. Then add your egg to the beef and crackers.
  • Add all the other ingredients to the bowl and mix well.
  • Scoop mixture into balls and press down into mini burgers. We used a burger presser but this is optional.
  • You should get around 11-12 burgers depending on how big you make them. If you use a burger presser they will all remain the same size.
  • Cook your burgers by using a panini grill for 3-4 minutes. Alternatively you can pan fry them flipping them over after 3-4 mins. You can check the temperature of your burgers when done. They should be cooked to a temperature of 145F on the inside but so long as they are not pink on the inside they should be cooked through.
  • Use cookie cutters to cut cheese to the size of your mini burgers.
  • Prepare your condiments and salad items to place onto your burgers.
  • Serve with potato wedges, fries, pasta or rice.
    Enjoy!
