Geo-boards are often used in schools for Math lessons. They are good for teaching shapes, symmetry and geometry. They make learning fun and also provide opportunity for fine motor skills and concentration.
You can easily make your own geo-boards which we have also done.
Check out these geoboards!
We used;
- Some cork boards (purchased From a thrift store)
- Pins or tacks
- Rubber bands
These homemade geo-boards are great. You can use the pins to design your own shapes and patterns.
However the pins aren’t the best for smaller children so you do have to supervise when using these.
Then we purchased these geo-boards online as they are a great teaching tool. Even pre-school children can learn how to build shapes, or even numbers & letters.
I designed some geo-board patterns for my kids to try out. My son was able to do these easily enough. My 4 year old daughter struggled with a couple of them, but she persevered and challenged herself to some of the more difficult patterns.
These cards were made so that my daughter could practice her shapes and my son could learn the names of some of the most complex shapes.
For geo-boards you need rubber bands and something to build your shape on.
Because geo-boards are so versatile you can use anything. There are tons of ideas online!
Starting Off Simple
The first few picture cards I made were the more familiar shapes that are usually shown to toddlers and preschoolers. In other words, shapes like squares, triangles and rectangles were the easiest of the shapes for my daughter. So she did these ones with ease before trying the other shapes.
More Complex Shapes
My son enjoyed doing the more complex shapes and showed his sister how to do them. We also researched the names of some of the shapes.
Some of the other shapes we created were;
- Heart
- Star
- Pentagon
- Hexagon
- Diamond
- Octagon
- Cross
- Butterfly
And we even tried making our own shapes to see what creations we could come up with.
And the great thing about geo-boards, is that there are endless possibilities. You can create shapes or even pictures. It gets those little minds thinking of ideas.
As I mentioned, you can use almost anything to create a geo-board!
For instance here are some ideas to give you some inspiration;
- A Pumpkin
- A block of wood
- Cork Boards
- Foam balls/blocks
- Lego
- Anything you can hook rubber bands to!!
If you are using a piece of wood, then nails work better. However if you are using something that has more of a softer inside texture like a pumpkin, then pins will work just as well.
