Butterflies are interesting creatures to learn about. Whether you are researching different kinds of butterflies or learning about where they come from. Children will find it fascinating. And when it comes to crafts and art, butterflies are very popular.

Butterfly Supplies

For your butterflies you will need;

  • Coffee filters
  • Food colour
  • A doppler if you have one
  • Some water (optional)
  • Pipe cleaners (for when they are dry)

Creating Colour On Your Coffee Filters

This part of making the butterflies was a learning curve for us. Firstly we had water on hand to mix with the food colour. We found that watering the colours down did not bring out the colours very well when they went onto the filters.

Sure the colours ran into each other. But we found the water on the filters made the colours bleed into each other far too much that it ended up just one colour. They didn’t seem to be as vibrant as we thought they would.

So then we decided to apply the food colour onto the filters directly from the bottle without the water. The results were much better and the colours looked superb once dry.

Squeezing directly from the bottle worked much better.

The colours didn’t run into each other as much so they showed up much brighter!

These are some that we did over easter time. They were almost like tie dye.

Making Your Butterflies

Once your coffee filters are dry, you can start making them into butterflies. For your coffee filter butterflies you will need pipe cleaners. Most kids can do this part on their own but smaller children may need a little help.

Firstly scrunch your coffee filter in the middle
Fold pipe cleaner so that the filter is inside
Twist the top of the pipe cleaner to secure it in place

Wrap pipe cleaner onto filter
Twist pipe cleaner to secure
Make antenna

Once you’ve secured your pipe cleaner, you can curl the ends to make antenna for your butterfly. Open up your coffee filter at each side to spread out your butterfly. The filter becomes the wings! Your butterflies look so pretty once they finished. You can add beads onto the pipe cleaners also to make eyes if you wanted to.
