Autumn/fall time is a beautiful time of year. All those colours on the leaves changing. It’s a beauty that we have to embrace because as you know those leaves soon fall. And before you know it, it’s winter time. Our autumn tree craft is a great craft to do while we still have all those beautiful colours.
Many crafts are great for using those real leaves. However this craft is a little different. We used fake leaves instead!
You can pick up these fake leaves from most craft stores. These were purchased at our local discount store. They come in packs and are usually used for decorative purposes. These were perfect for our autumn tree.
For this craft you will need;
- Some fake autumn leaves
- Brown paper/card
- White paper/card
- Scissors
- Glue sticks
- Pencil
Making Your Tree
To start you will need to draw around your child’s arm and hand. If they are able to keep their arm still they can do this part on their own. However my daughter preferred that I drew around her’s. I used a white pencil crayon so that we could see the outline better when we came to cutting it out.
Once the outline of their tree is drawn they can cut it out. Smaller children do need a little bit of help with this part, especially around the fingers. But by all means let them try. After all practise makes perfect. My daughter got frustrated so I did take over.
Sticking the tree on is easy enough. My daughter added grass with marker. Then it was time to add our leaves.
The fake leaves were pretty big in comparison to my daughters hand. However once we started adding them to the tree they looked great! She also placed some of them onto the ground. After all it is fall. I loved how all the leaves were different colours so we were able to mix it up a bit.
Of course depending on how many leaves your child puts on the tree, you may discover that their hand will no longer be visible. But it is completely up to them how they do it. Some kids prefer only to use a couple leaves. Others like my daughter cover it lol! But you get the idea.
Autumn Tree Finished
Of course you don’t have to use fake leaves for your autumn tree. You can opt to use real ones or even cut out some paper leaves using a template.
We just had these for another project we were doing so we decided to use them.
Our autumn tree turned out cute, and a nice little fall craft to put on display.
Other Fall Projects
Ever wondered why the leaves change colour and fall from the trees during autumn time? There are lots of great fall crafts and activities you can do using leaves.
- How about doing a scavenger hunt using the coloured leaves? Collect some leaves and then go on a hunt to find other items of nature that are the same colour. This can also be done in spring time with the pretty flowers.
- Use real leaves as pretty sun catchers. Paint them in glue and they look so pretty especially when caught right as the sun is going down.
- Draw around the shape of the leaves on paper and colour and cut them out to make your own leaves.
- Alternatively place leaves under paper and use crayons to trace leaf. See the lines through the leaf.
- Make autumn leaf jars! A beautiful way to use up some of those fallen leaves. Check out our post on leaf jars for some inspiration. These look awesome in the living room come winter.
There are lots of great ways to use those leaves around autumn.
Top tip; Pressing your leaves in a book will help to keep them from tearing before crafting with them.
