This week we made 3D portraits using everyday household objects. I had done this craft when my son was little but we used Paper Mache. This time we decided to just use hot glue and it worked just as well. We started off with regular glue which also works well but you do have to wait for that to dry and my kids are impatient so we tend to use hot glue for most of our crafts.

Start by gathering up some items you can use for your face. We used;

  • Some cardboard from a box (something sturdy works better)
  • An egg box
  • Some Yarn
  • Markers
  • Acrylic paint, skin tone if you have it or mix colours together if not
  • Hot glue gun
  • Pencil & scissors

Have your child draw the shape they want for their face. You don’t have to know where eyes etc will go at this point but my daughter wanted to draw on her facial features. They will just be getting covered anyway but whatever keeps them happy 😉

Then have your child glue the egg carton pieces where they want them. Your child will need a little supervision here as the glue gun does get super hot. E is only just starting to use one without assistance. Then mix up your chosen paint colours.

E loved painting her face and because we used hot glue she didn’t have to wait for the glue/Paper Mache to dry. We did however have to wait a little for the paint to dry before we could do the next steps but we went and washed up and had lunch while it dried off a little.

The concentration that goes into the painting part is very cute to watch 🥰

E had to make sure she had covered every last grey spot before we could set it aside.

Once the paint was dry, all that was left was for the extra pieces to be added. E used white chalk marker for the whites of her eyes and blue marker for her eye colour. She added some brown yarn for her hair and a small piece of red for her mouth.

Then she pretended she was at the hair salon and cut her hair. Thankfully it wasn’t her real hair as she got a bit scissor happy 😬🤣 I think our 3D portrait turned out so cute!
