Kids love learning about space and it’s very interesting for us adults to study the planets a little more too. When my son was 3 he became obsessed with space and everything planets.. so we started doing our research. We read stories and factual books about space and learnt all the planets names.
We even purchased an astronaut costume and built a ‘space fort’ to coincide with our space theme lol!
I had seen something online about 3D paint and thought it might be fun to try out for our space picture. We decided to make a solar system painting with all the planets lined up. I printed a picture from google images and placed it on the table so that my son could see where the planets were and how far they were from the sun. This just gave him a guide to follow as he painted his picture.
To make our 3D paint we just used 3 ingredients- THAT’S IT!!
- White Glue
- Shaving Foam
- Paint (Tempura,Acrylic..)
You can even use food colouring for this but we thought we would try paint and it mixed well. The shaving cream makes it 3D and the glue helps it bind and stick better without smudging.
We didn’t do the exact colours but close enough 😉
It was tough fitting all the planets on the paper as my son made them very big, but we painted our way up the side and it worked well. We made sure to make the sun as big as we could. Although Saturn pretty much took a lot of the page up 😬
To finish my son added some star stickers and rocket stickers he could find. We smudged the moon a little to give it a cool effect.
We used a pipe cleaner for the ring on Saturn but you can use anything that will work the same.
My son was very proud of his space picture and he even tried his hand at writing the names of all the planets. We still have this pride of place in our playroom.
