This 3D haunted house craft is a fun activity for halloween which introduces children to three dimensional math! They can get creative whilst bringing their art to life. You can even expand on this craft and make a regular house. Or how about a gingerbread house at Christmas time?

Younger children may need help with this activity. My 4 year old wanted to do this with her 10 year old brother but we had to guide her.

For your 3D Haunted House you will need;

  • White paper
  • Coloured paper
  • Markers or crayons
  • Scissors
  • Glue sticks

Start by folding your white paper and your coloured paper in half!

Putting your house together is a step by step guide. You can always add extra details at the end. Start by drawing a rectangle shape on your white paper as shown in the pics.

Draw a line across the page leaving a gap at each side.
Work your lines all the way up, stopping before you reach the top.
You should have a rectangle like shown.
Fold your paper again making sure the rectangle is on the outside.
You will see half of the rectangle on one side.
Draw details onto the half side shown. This will be the front of the house.

The outside part of the paper should be facing you as you draw so that when you open it you can see the top of the house at the top of the page.

Turn the paper away from you and cut along the lines, stopping where the line ends.
Flip the paper over and fold the outside edges inwards.
When the paper is flipped back over your house will look 3 dimensional.

3 Dimensional House

Once you’ve done the opposite side of your haunted house, you will have a roof and your house will start to come together. As shown in the picture. You can add extras such as a chimney or other items once your haunted house is finished.

Colouring Your House

Once your 3D haunted house is done, you can start to colour it and make it your own. Before we started, we stuck our 3 dimensional house onto our back paper. This holds your house up so that it stands. I highly recommend using card stock if you have it as it is much sturdier than paper.

Apply glue ONLY to the outside of the rectangle as shown.
Lay the white paper across the coloured paper/card. Press down with your hands to secure.
Your house should stand up and look 3 dimensional now.

And to colour your 3D haunted house you can use whatever you wish. We have used pencil crayons, regular crayons & markers.

Colour around your house as shown.
You can draw lines where your ground & sky will be divided.
Half of the page will be sky and the other half will be grass or whatever you choose as your ground.

Finishing Touches To Your 3D Haunted House

Once you have coloured the majority of your house in, you can add other little details. Here are some ideas to give you inspiration;

  • Standing pumpkins in the garden
  • Grave stones
  • Chimney on the roof
  • Flying bats
  • Mail box
  • Spiders
  • Flying witch
  • Ghosts

You can let your imagination go crazy. Because it does take a little patience cutting things out, smaller children may need help.

However older kids will go to town creating their houses. My son ended up making our houses into a haunted village and stuck them all on some poster board.

My daughter added a vampire in her house and a standing pumpkin onto her grass.

To make extra items that are 3 dimensional cut a little extra at the bottom of your item and fold. As a result this is what you will make it stand up.

They turned out super cool and are great to put on display at halloween.
